Mandarling terms of use

Last updated October 26, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and the maker of Mandarling, named under Contact below, about using the app. If you don’t agree with them, please don’t use Mandarling. The privacy policy says what happens to your data.

Using Mandarling

Mandarling is a Mandarin learning app for Android, for people 18 and over. You may use it for your own learning, on phones you own or use, as long as you follow these terms. Mandarling is licensed to you, not sold.

What it can and can’t do

Mandarling is a practice tool. Its speaking check relies on your phone’s speech recognizer, and its tone check compares your pitch with a computer voice; both are approximate and can be wrong. The dictionary, example sentences and translations come from open sources and your phone’s translator, and may contain mistakes. Like any real dictionary, it includes crude and offensive words. Mandarling doesn’t promise that you will learn Mandarin, pass an exam such as the HSK, or be understood by any particular person. If a card is wrong, open it and tap the flag to tell us.

Free practice and the unlock

Practice is free for a number of minutes each day (currently 15). We may change that number; the app always shows what is left today. A one-time payment, made through Google Play, unlocks unlimited practice and every feature we add later that runs on your phone. It is not a subscription, and it stays unlocked on phones signed in to the same Google account. The price or payment options may change; a copy that is already unlocked stays unlocked.

About AI. Cloud AI costs us every time it is used. If we add features that use it, they will be optional and priced separately, and they are not part of the unlock.
About ads. Mandarling shows no ads today. We may add ads to free practice in the future, for example a small banner. If we do, we will say so in the app and in the privacy policy before ads appear, and a copy that has been unlocked will not show them.

Google Play handles payments, taxes, receipts and refunds under its own terms. If something goes wrong, write to us and we will help.

Your cards and files

The cards you add, and the backups you save, are yours. Mandarling keeps them on your phone. You decide what to share: share only cards you have the right to share, and nothing unlawful or harmful.

Content and services from others

Mandarling includes data from CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0), Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0 FR), the HSK 3.0 syllabus word lists and OpenCC (Apache 2.0). Their licenses apply to that data and are listed in the app under Settings, Credits and licenses. Google services (speech recognition, text-to-speech, ML Kit translation and Google Play) are used under Google’s own terms. HSK is a trademark of its owner; Mandarling is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the HSK program.

Acceptable use

Don’t copy, modify or reverse engineer Mandarling except where the law or an open license above allows it. Don’t try to get around the unlock or the daily limit, and don’t use Mandarling in a way that breaks the law or harms other people or our services.

No warranty

To the extent the law allows, Mandarling is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind. We don’t promise that it will be free of errors, always available, or work on every phone.

Limit of liability

To the extent the law allows, the maker of Mandarling is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost data or profits, arising from your use of Mandarling, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid for Mandarling in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing here limits rights you have by law that cannot be limited. Back up your cards from time to time (Settings, Back up to a file).

Changes

We may update the app and these terms. A changed version is posted here with a new date, and for a big change we will say so in the app. If you keep using Mandarling after a change, you accept it. If you don’t, stop using it and uninstall it; your purchase is then subject to Google Play’s policies.

Ending

You can stop at any time by uninstalling Mandarling. We may stop offering the app, or limit access, if you break these terms or the law.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, except that consumer protection laws where you live that cannot be waived still apply to you.
