Recognizing a Chinese character silently on a screen and producing the word out loud with intelligible tones are two different skills. Mandarling lets you bring the Mandarin words you already collect in Anki, Pleco, or a class spreadsheet onto your Android phone—and practice saying them aloud.

Why silent flashcard grading misses speaking habits

When you flip a regular flashcard in your head, it is easy to grade yourself “Good” because you remembered the rough syllable—even if your third tone didn’t drop, your 桌 zhuō came out as zhōu, or you froze trying to recall the word from English. Answering out loud forces active verbal recall and lets an impartial recognizer tell you right away when a syllable drifted.

How to import your decks in 3 steps

1. Export from Anki, Pleco, or a spreadsheet:
   • Anki / AnkiDroid: Export a Deck Package (.apkg) or Notes in Plain Text (.txt).
   • Pleco: Export your saved flashcard categories as a text file onto your phone or Google Drive.
   • Class lists & textbooks: Save any CSV file with Chinese characters (or Pinyin) and English meanings.
2. Open Mandarling → Settings → Restore or add cards from a file: Pick the exported file. Everything parses locally on your phone—no cloud upload and no account sign-up—matching verified CC-CEDICT readings and example sentences automatically.
3. Review one deck at a time, or hands-free: Tap your imported deck on Home to practice saying just those words, or switch on Hands-free mode so your phone speaks the English prompt, listens for your Mandarin answer, and moves through your deck while you walk.
